In March 1992, Hilary Topper founded HJMT, the public relations and social media agency. Before starting the business, she worked at top New York City Public Relations agencies such as Ogilvy & Mather PR; Hill, Holiday/PR; and Ruder Finn/PR. She was Director of Public Relations and Development for two non-profit organizations in New York City.
In 2007, Hilary made the dramatic decision to launch a new media division within her agency. This decision made her an early adopter of social media and as a result, helped her firm grow substantially in the past few years. In 2008, Topper started this blog, which now receives more than 45,000 unique visitors each month. Her blog was named “Blog of the Year” by the Fair Media Council and was also a two-time Stevie Awards “Woman’s Blog of the Year” finalist.
In August 2009, Hilary wrote one of the first books on Social Media, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Social Media, but were afraid to ask… Building Your Business Using Consumer Generated Media. The book received high accolades and support from the PR industry and the business community including numerous articles and reviews in publications throughout the world.
In 2011, Hilary launched Hilary Topper On Air, a blogtalk radio show that boasts more than 5,000 listeners. In 2012, Topper founded the Social Media Association. One year later, Hilary Topper was selected to be a beta tester for Google as a Google Glass Explorer. She and her staff took that opportunity and launched the first Google Glass Reality Show, Glasslandia.
Hilary is an adjunct professor at Hofstra University in their Master’s program teaching public relations and technology.
Hilary received numerous awards and honors for her accomplishments from PRWeek, Newsday, The Communicator Awards, International Association of Business Communicators, Long Island Center for Business & Professional Women, Long Island Business News, Girl Scouts of Nassau County,, The Stevie Awards and BRAVA Award. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Hunter College and her Masters in Public Administration from Baruch College.
